Charges pending in accident

Rankin Inlet (Aug 06/03) - Charges in an accident that sent two women South to hospital are still pending, according to Rankin Inlet RCMP.

Both women have since returned to Rankin after being treated.

The investigating officer is currently on holidays and the expectation is that no charges will be laid until the end of August.

An RCMP spokesperson did say that they do expect to lay charges in connection with accident.

The rollover happened on July 28, 13 kilometres outside of Rankin.

The driver, who has not been identified by police, but was confirmed working for the hamlet, was not medevaced along with his two female passengers.

Police said that they suspect alcohol and speed to have been the contributing factors in the crash.

Part of the investigation was on hold as RCMP waited for the two women to return to Rankin so they could be interviewed.

That has occurred and the investigation is on hold until the officer in charge returns to Rankin.

Ron Roach, SAO with the hamlet, said the employee has not been dealt with on a hamlet level because he was not driving a hamlet vehicle.

The hamlet towed the vehicle as a favour to one of the victims.

"She didn't want it out there any more and people kept going by to look at it," said Roach.
