Yellowknife (Aug 29/03) - It has been termed "an historic meeting" by Jane Stewart, minister of Human Resources Development Canada.

Monday's meeting, which brought together federal, provincial, and territorial ministers responsible for social services, and leaders of five national aboriginal organizations, discussed the needs of aboriginal children and persons with disabilities.

"The result of today's meeting have been extremely positive," said Stewart following the discussions at St. Patrick high school.

According to Stewart, aboriginal leaders are asking for a continuing process on sensitive issues like child welfare.

"We want commitment to ongoing participation on the minister's level," said Dwight A. Dorey, national chief for the Congress of Aboriginal Peoples.

"The result of the process is a serious look at the needs of our people."

Although Dorey was pleased with the outcome of Monday's talks, he expressed some concern over the additional funding and resources required to commit to any agreement.
