Rankin Inlet (Aug 27/03) - In April Paul Williams issued a challenge.

The Anglican Church pastor said that for every $100 he raised for the church's youth committee he would walk five kilometres.

That is the distance from town to Apache Pass.

When he issued the challenge he expected that he would raise $200 maybe $300.

However, much to his surprise and joy he raised $790.

"I was ecstatic and grateful to the community," said Williams.

The earnings meant Williams had to put his money where his feet are.

Almost $800 at five kilometres per $100 is 40 kilometres.

In five kilometre segments the pastor made good on his side of the bargain.

The money will now be used to aid in youth activities at the church.

One idea is setting up a youth group.

"It's a fledgling organization, which was one of the reasons for the walk. We wanted to let the youth know we care about them," said Williams.

The youth group would provide local children a place to access activities in a safe and wholesome environment.

"There is a grievous need things for our youth to do," said Williams.

"Looking at the number of kids wandering the streets I think there is a great need of finding activities right across the board."

The youth in the Anglican congregation number around 55, a majority under the age of 12.

Although primarily open to youth from the Anglican congregation, Williams said it wouldn't be an exclusive club.

"We wouldn't turn any youth away," he said.

Over the next little while the church's youth committee and the congregation's youth will discuss what activities would best serve local needs.

Williams is planning on running the fundraiser again next year with one change.

"We hope to increase the distance next year," he said.
