Iqaluit (Aug 25/03) - A 16-year-old died in a single-vehicle accident in Iqaluit last week.

Kevin Dunphy was driving towards Apex with a 15-year-old friend when the car rolled off the road on Aug. 19 at about 6:30 p.m.

Dunphy and the passenger were brought to the hospital from where the seriously injured 15-year-old passenger was flown to Ottawa for treatment.

Police say the teenaged passenger is expected to survive.

Police said Dunphy succumbed to what appeared to be head injuries and died around midnight that night at Baffin Regional Hospital.

The name of the injured youth has not been released on the wishes of the family.

Details were still sketchy last week and police are awaiting the findings of an autopsy sometime next week.

However, Const. Chris Coles noted the day after the accident that "it appears seat belts were not worn."

Whether that led to the death of Dunphy, the coroner assigned to the case said he didn't know.

"Until we know what the cause of death was, we have no way to say what the contributing factors were," said Frank Pierce.

Coles said there were no witnesses to the accident but preliminary reports would have the car hitting the embankment and rolling off the roadway.
