Yellowknife (Aug 22/03) - Residents on 51st and 52nd streets are wondering if anything can be done to prevent vandalism in the alley behind their homes after several cars had their tires slashed over the weekend.

"It's happened so often that we've become accustomed to it," said Paula Bauhaus.

"It doesn't seem like a whole lot can be done to stop it."

At least eight cars had their tires slashed last Friday night. Many of them still sat slumped in the alley as of Wednesday morning, listing to one side like a sinking freighter.

Bauhuas, who went away for the weekend, said she was lucky her car wasn't one of the ones damaged.

"We usually take our chances and park in the alley," she said.

But some of her neighbours weren't as fortunate.

Hau Hunyh's Honda Civic had two of its tires slashed.

"It's too bad. I'll (have to) pay for (new tires) myself," he said.

Hunyh said he didn't bother calling the police.

"I don't think they can do much," he said.

Joy Gualberto, who lives on 52nd Street said vandalism in the alley is a common occurrence and there isn't much people can do to stop it.

"It happens a lot," she said. "This isn't a great place to park your car."

Friday's tire slashings were part of a recent spate of auto-related vandalism. Last week, eight city taxi cabs had their rear windows smashed. Vandals also broke into 15 vehicles at a construction site near the airport.

Police may have received a break in the case when a witness spotted two young men walking with a long gun near Sissons Court Monday night.

When police arrived at the scene the men were gone, but investigators found two guns hidden in a wooded area behind the apartment buildings.

Police matched the guns with a set stolen from a van on Forrest Drive Monday evening.

Richards said a forensic team is analyzing the guns and the van for clues.

He said it's too early to say if there's a connection between the two young men and the rash of vandalism cases.
