Premier recognizes public service employees

2003 recipients of Award for Excellence

Yellowknife (Aug 18/03) - Premier Stephen Kakfwi is again recognizing the work of numerous public service employees.

The 2003 recipients of the Premier's Award for Excellence have been announced.

They will be recognized in a ceremony during the fall sitting of the legislative assembly.

Six individuals and several team efforts are among the winners.

Raymond Tuccaro is one of those being recognized.

"I'm really honoured. I usually do my work and that's it," he said recently from the Yellowknife Correctional Centre.

Tuccaro has worked as a traditional councillor with the centre for the last five years. He also is a liaison officer for staff and inmates.

He has worked for 35 years in the corrections field and was recognized because of his "dedication towards the rehabilitation process for inmates."

Other individuals who will be honoured this fall include Al Woods, CEO of the Stanton Territorial Health Authority and the Yellowknife Health and Social Services Authority, for his "hands on approach in increasing the level of integration between various departments."

Woods, too, says he was both delighted and surprised about winning the award and only learned recently of his nomination.

"So many good things happen to you in the North," he said.

John Nishi, a bison ecologist with RWED in Fort Smith, was a key player in the Hook Lake wood bison project in which a healthy captive breeding herd of bison was to be established. He, too, will be honoured.

For his initiative in helping the territories' youth, Keith Hickling, manager of Fish and Wildlife with RWED in Norman Wells also will be recognized.

Hickling was active in creating the Youth at Risk Trapper Training Program.

"I accept this as part of a team. I'm quite pleased to work for such a department."

Dr. Anne Gunn, an ungulate biologist with RWED is well-known for her innovation in her area of expertise and is respected among her peers both within and outside the GNWT.

Known for her major contribution in the fields of performance management and program evaluation, Karyn Hicks, programs advisor with budgeting and evaluation at the financial management board secretariat, also will receive this award.

Teams recognized include the equal pay team at the financial management board secretariat; the territorial biomedical engineering team - Stanton Territorial health authority, as well as the Tlicho negotiation team; the Idaa trail project team and the Inuvik regional health and social services centre project team.
