Arctic Red River (Aug 11/03) - Construction on a $1.2 million upgrade to Tsiigehtchic's water filtration system is starting soon, said John Picek, superintendent for GNWT Municipal and Community Affairs in Inuvik.

The new facility will include a filtration system and pumping station construction was slated to start this month.

"It will address the needs of the population for the next 20 years," said Picek.

The final drawings were completed last week and a contract was negotiated with TSE Corporation to begin work on the structure and building components as soon as the materials are purchased and delivered. Right now water is filtered as it is pumped out of Tso Lake and into the water truck. Although the water is safe to drink, it lacks clarity.

"The water is okay, but it has its moments," said Raymond Madore, senior administrative officer for the hamlet.

With a new filtration system the water will be cleaner and clear, said Madore.

Right now, Tsiigehtchic's water runs brown.

Although the colour of the water is only aesthetic, he anticipates tighter national water quality regulations in the future.

Picek said the filtration system should be complete by March 31, 2004.
