Rankin Inlet (July 23/03) - Edmonton is the City of Champions, New York the City That Never Sleeps and Iqaluit is Canada's Newest Capital, but what's Rankin Inlet?

It seems everything has a slogan, junk food, cars, people, even cities and now a new contest may give Rankin a slogan of its own.

Richard Warren, who is on internship with the Hamlet of Rankin Inlet, has come up with an idea to heighten community involvement.

"We have a lot of community spirit, but there isn't a lot of community engagement," said Warren.

To change that he came up with "The Great Rankin Inlet Slogan Competition".

"It's a community building exercise," he told hamlet council trying to find support for the endeavour.

Currently Rankin is unofficially known as "The Home of Jordan Tootoo".

But, Warren said, there isn't a slogan that promotes the hamlet as a tourist destination and a regional centre.

Not only does the contest have the ability to raise the profile of the community in the Kivalliq and Nunavut as a whole the whole community can participate.

"It would appeal to people of any age range," said Warren.

"A contest of this sort will engage the people of Rankin Inlet in community issues.

It will serve the purpose of getting the people of Rankin Inlet thinking about their community."

If community spirit isn't enough, Rankin Hamlet council has lent their support and provided a little motivation to entering the contest.

At the last hamlet meeting councillors approved a $500 grand prize from the recreation budget to the person with the best slogan. As well, Warren said, there will be random prizes for other entries.

"I think this is a great idea, something that will signify what we are is a long time coming," said Coun. David Ittinuar.
