Iqaluit (July 21/03) - Lesley Serkoak holds up a white envelope and lightly jingles the change inside.

It is a $5 donation she received last Sunday from Grade 2 student Skye Lacroix who set up a lemonade stand in her neighbourhood.

"Isn't that cute?" said Serkoak. "Well," she added talking to parents and friends of Joamie school, "every little bit helps."

Joamie school burned down July 4. A new school will take about two years to build. Volunteers are raising money for items that were lost in the blaze.

Greg Kinloch bagged groceries with about 16 other NorthwesTel employees last Saturday at Northmart, raising money for Joamie.

"Our social committee met, and said it would be nice if we show our support to the community," said Kitty Rennie, at NorthwesTel.

"The Department of Education has said they are buying all the building materials and stuff.

"So our fundraising is going towards things that won't be covered."

The volunteer grocery baggers made $1,866.50 at Northmart working 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday.

Northmart has agreed to match the amount raised.

"It wasn't just staff members. It was family members of the staff," said Rennie.

"We're hoping to do it again," Rennie added. "We're really amazed at the generosity of the community."
