Iglulik (July 21/03) - Police will not be laying charges in connection to the beating of a man from Montreal by more than 30 people in Iglulik while he visited the community several weeks ago.

"At the request of the complainant, no further action will be initiated by this office," said Cpl. Perry Bierlert of the Iglulik RCMP detachment.

RCMP in Iqaluit said the man may have been doing something that made the community feel uncomfortable.

"Some people in the community may have felt something this man was doing was threatening the community," said Const. Chris Coles of the RCMP V Division.

Iglulik mayor Elijah Evaluarjuk wants to make clear that the community is still a good place to visit.

"The guy was just here at a bad time," he said.

Evaluarjuk didn't deny that the assault actually took place, but he would say very little.

"I don't know what he was doing in Iglulik, he said he was here hunting," said Evaluarjuk.
