Inuvik (July 11/03) - There will be a "No Vacancy" sign hanging outside Inuvik schools this fall, with a full contingent of staff remaining.

James Anderson, director for the Beaufort Delta Education Council, said there will be fewer than five staff changes at Inuvik schools this year.

"It's an unusual year," Anderson said. "Last year, we probably staffed close to 20 positions for all of Inuvik."

Anderson said virtually every teacher at Sir Alexander Mackenzie elementary school will be staying.

At Samuel Hearne Senior Secondary, principal Carson Atkinson will be replaced by Dr. Peter Hough who is transferring from Tulita. There will be one transfer from SSHS to SAMs and two new replacements.

In the region, 40 new positions will need to be filled, still down from last year.

"Last year we filled about 60 positions last year, so it's an improvement," he said.

Trade school on wheels

A new program called Mobile Instruction for Trades and Technology (MITT) will begin next fall that will bring trades and technology

"We're outfitting a trailer for small engine repair, welding, carpentry and electrical modules that can be taught in the on-road communities in the Beaufort Delta," Anderson said.

As well, there has been discussion on instruction in the areas of beautician and hairdressing.

"An itinerant skills program shouldn't be limited to the trade areas or skill sets that are most associated with male gender," Anderson said.
