That means there's one month for anybody interested in the position to step forward and make their intentions known.
So far, only Dettah Chief Richard Edjericon of the Yellowknives Dene First Nation has announced plans to run for the position.
"My work at the local level is now done," Edjericon said Thursday.
"It's time for a new leader to come in and implement a new vision that will work for tomorrow.
"I know the issues. It will be up to the people to decide if I have the support to win," he said.
A new leader will be chosen at the Dene Nation assembly in Aklavik from July 2 to 8.
Erasmus is stepping down after 16 years at the helm of the Dene First Nation.
"I feel it's a good time for someone else to step in. I feel I've done the best I can and it's time for new blood," he said last week in an interview.
Erasmus said he has ruled out running for MLA or any other public office at this time.
"I don't want to close the door on anything, but right now I am not thinking about it," he said.
