Cape Dorset (June 02/03) - Cape Dorset is a tiny arctic community where there is not a lot to do, unless you are between the ages of zero and five.

Qaluituk Kingwatsiaq is the coordinator of the Cape Dorset Family Resource Centre that isn't just a place for kids to have fun.

"We're developing the kids' alphabet, teaching them shapes and colours and I read to them," she said.

The children attending the resource centre also learn basic social skills and they are educated on right from wrong.

"We teach them no fighting, no swearing and how to share," said Kingwatsiaq.

Co-ordinator for almost a year, she said she loves her job and working with the children.

"I took over for the other coordinator, she is away on maternity leave," said Kingwatsiaq.

The resource centre also helps the children learn language skills before going to school.

"It helps them learn Inuktitut to English skills," said Kingwatsiaq.

"It's very important because before they go to school they need to learn these things."

The centre also provides a place where parents and guardians can interact with their children in a fun and educational environment.

In fact, to be eligible for the program children can't come alone; it's not a day care, Kingwatsiaq explained.

"They have to have their mothers or guardians bring them here."

The children are also given a healthy snack, and are not allowed to bring junk food or pop with them.

Currently, between eight and 12 children visit the centre on a daily basis at the Cape Dorset Community Centre.
