Inuvik (June 27/03) - A shave and a haircut might run more than two bits these days, but there is a place in Inuvik where you can still get both.

Styles and Tangles is owned by Gail McIntosh and managed by Anna Mae Fairley.

After bouncing around a bit, the salon has found a new home on mainstreet.

Styles and Tangles was first located above Frosty's Pub, then in the Beckett Building. It returned to Frosty's and now it's on Mackenzie Road across from North Mart.

Fairley said the move has been "excellent" for business.

"We're getting way more people; the walk-in traffic is non-stop," Fairley said.

"It's an ideal location."

Pleased with the new location, Fairley said they have more room and also has air conditioning than in previous locations.

Over 40 years in the business, Fairly first started cutting hair at 15 years-old and had her license at 16 in Edmonton.

"At my first job, I made $12.50 a week and I thought I had the world by the tail," Fairley said.

At her second job, she received a pay hike to $17.00 per week and then, at 18, she opened her own shop across from the Strathcona Hotel.

"I moved to Fort St. John and I also had a shop in Dawson Creek," she said. "I've been working my way North."

Barber Billy Chelrade has been cutting hair for 15 years and also offers hot shaves with a straight razor.

"He's a real perfectionist when it comes to haircuts," Fairley said.

Stylist Christina Gruben was born in Tuktoyaktuk and trained in Calgary. Fairley said Gruben keeps all the young women happy with the latest styles.

"You don't have to go to Edmonton or Calgary now to get a style," Fairley said.

"She can cut it anyway you want it."

Styles and Tangles plan a grand opening for the new shop next week.
