Iqaluit (June 23/03) - Nunavut The Nunavut government and Nunavut Tunngavik Incorporated were in court last week arguing with the federal government.

Nunavut representatives are fighting to get land claims beneficiaries exempt from the new gun legislation.

They say the legislation is an infringement on Inuit rights -- specifically the right promised to Inuit in the Nunavut Land Claims Agreement to hunt without a license or paying fees.

Federal lawyers are requesting the entire case be dropped.

A decision will be made within the next couple of weeks by Justice Robert Kilpatrick.
