No lifeguards at Long Lake

Yellowknife (June 20/03) - People who swim at Long Lake Beach this summer will do so at their own risk.

The City of Yellowknife, which usually provides lifeguards to watch over swimmers at the beach, was unable to attract qualified lifeguards to offer lifeguard service at the beach this summer.

Phil Lee, the territorial parks department regional superintendent for North Slave Region, said RWED is looking into ways to provide lifeguard service.

"Even limited lifeguard service is better than no lifeguard service," he said.

Lee said he would like lifeguards to be on duty during the peak hours on Saturday and Sunday.

However, RWED is not concerned about liability.

"There are a lot of unsupervised beaches around here."
