Yellowknife (June 11/03) - Dressed in zany outfits and equipped with kazoos are the ladies of the Yellowknife Bike Choir.

The group was started by choir member France Benoit after she heard the Toronto Bike Choir sing on a David Suzuki show.

The choir sings to the tune of famous songs that have been "bicyclized" through changing the lyrics.

After only five practices, the choir put on their first performance at the Ecology North and Yellowknife Multisport Club Family Bike Rally on Sunday.

"I just know they must be special guys. I confess they make me fantasize. Keep your movie stars for what they're worth. Give me a man who wants to save the Earth. Oh, we like, we like, we like -- a man on a bike," the choir sang during their favourite song "Two Wheel Tango."

Ecology North's Doug Ritchie rode around on his bike during the song, wearing bicycle shorts and a white collared shirt, black jacket and bow tie.

After only practising together for a week the bike choir sounded excellent, which the ladies say is due to their choir director Margo Nightingale, who is also the conductor of the Yellowknife Choir.

"We needed expertise first, but the raw talent we could provide," said Benoit with a laugh.

When asked why the choir was put together, Benoit said it was to celebrate the bicycle, but choir member Lani Cooke had something else in mind.

"We want to support those sexy men on a bike. The more men in bike shorts we see, we'll know we have completed our mission," said Cooke.
