A long way to go

SideDoor far from reaching budget target

Yellowknife (May 21/03) - The SideDoor youth centre will end up $188,000 in the red if its proposed budget stands without more donations.

Confusion about its 2003 budget in Friday's Yellowknifer made it seem that the budget was already committed and the debt already in place.

Only $74,000 of the $262,109.23 proposed budget has been raised from a variety of donors, as well as $40,000 from the City of Yellowknife.

But while the proposed budget calls for hiring five staff and three assistants, SideDoor currently has just one full-time employee.

The shortfall in what's required to run SideDoor means most of the proposed programs have had to be mothballed.

Its senior youth program, for example, shut down in early May because of a lack of funds, but is now running once a week. The only program still running is for junior youth.

The Yellowknifer apologizes for any confusion that may have resulted from Friday's article.
