Rankin Inlet (May 21/03) - A new flavour has been added to an old campaign.

This past week, members of the Girl Guides of Canada took to the streets in Rankin Inlet for their annual cookie drive fundraiser.

There are 75 girls registered in the Girl Guides movement in Rankin and the annual cookie drive is their biggest fundraiser of the year.

Local Guiding leader Kathleen Broderick says the Guides are selling a new brand of cookie this year.

"Basically, the cookies are the same flavour, chocolate and vanilla, that we usually sell," says Broderick.

"But, this year we have a new cookie manufacturer."

Dare Cookies of Kitchener, Ont., has taken over the contract to supply the Girl Guides of Canada with the tasty temptations for their annual fundraiser.

Mr. Christie has made the Girl Guides cookies for the past 40 years.

Broderick says changes in the industry led to the cookie contract being put out to tender this year.

She says Dare is Canadian owned and operates in a nut-free facility.

"That's pretty important, obviously, to people who suffer from nut allergies and a key selling point in our current environment.

"The box, itself, has also been changed. Its colours are now bright and energetic to reflect the spirit of today's Guiding movement."

Although Dare's first batch of Girl Guides cookies to hit the streets are the traditional flavours, the company will be releasing a brand new mint cookie to join the Guides lineup this coming fall.

Broderick says cookie sale profits go towards program development, sending the girls on trips and leadership development for local Guiders.

"This is one fundraiser where the money stays in the community to help the local movement.

"We had our big door-to-door drive on May 14.

"However, we still have plenty available and the $4 per box is the same as you would pay anywhere in Canada."

The Rankin Inlet Girl Guides of Canada will be holding their annual advancement ceremony on May 22, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Leo Ussak school.

"That's always a very exciting time for our girls. They really look forward to moving up, yes, but also simply having their efforts recognized."
