An interesting place to live

Radio host loving Iqaluit

Iqaluit (May 12/03) - For Ghislain Couture, one of the great things about living in Nunavut is that everyone he meets is doing something interesting.

"I have a friend and he goes out on flight to count beluga whales or narwhals. Everyone is just doing something interesting," said Couture.

He came to Iqaluit on July 15, 2002, from Montreal. Couture had been working at a call centre in the city and volunteering at the University of Montreal's radio station. He applied for a job with Nunavut's Francophone Association in March as its communications co-ordinator and he got it.

"A lot of the job description had to do with hosting a French radio show and coaching the volunteers," said Couture.

He admits he really didn't know much about Nunavut before he came to live in the territory. Couture said it was curiosity that convinced him the move would be a good one. Couture spoke to quite a few people living in the North while he worked at the call centre in Montreal and was always asking questions.

"I found it quite intriguing when I spoke to people from here. I talked to one person and they said it was great, but asked me not to tell anyone. That really stuck with me," he said.

Couture loved living in Montreal but was ready for a change when the job became open.

"There was a part of me that wanted to get away from the city and from all the concrete and all the cars," he said.

One of the things Couture noticed when he got to Iqaluit is how friendly everyone is. He said he loves walking down the street and saying hi to everyone.

Couture now runs the French radio station in Iqaluit, CFRT 107.3 FM. He said the station is doing well and is getting a lot of feedback on their programming. Couture is also the editor for a French magazine called "Le Toit du Monde." He was married last August and said he plans to stay in Iqaluit for a couple of years.
