Deh Cho temporarily without a physician; two doctors could be here by summer

Fort Simpson (Apr 04/03) - The Deh Cho has lost one physician but has gained another doctor's position.

Dr. David Barrett's one-year contract expired on Monday and he chose not to renew, according to Kathy Tsetso, CEO of Deh Cho Health and Social Services.

She said he didn't give any specific reason for leaving other than possibly having an opportunity elsewhere.

Dr. Barrett shared the Deh Cho position with Dr. Shane Barclay on a two-month rotational basis. Dr. Barclay isn't due back until May.

"We're actively recruiting," said Tsetso, who added that she does have prospect.

Dr. Barclay's contract is due for renewal in June.

Deh Cho Health and Social Services has, however, received additional funding for a second physician for the region, she said.

The second doctor may also be hired on a job share basis as that has been helpful in recruitment and retention, Tsetso said.

The doctor is currently based in Fort Simpson and visits one of six communities in the region each week.

The second doctor will likely be based in Fort Simpson as well but may travel more, she noted.

"We're not sure," she said. "I think it's wonderful (to have a second doctor). It's just, how do we make it all work for our area?"

Fort Simpson currently has a full complement of nurses, Tsetso added. Fort Liard and Fort Providence are short one nurse each.
