Makeover madness in Iqaluit

Moms get a new look

Iqaluit (Apr 28/03) - Ever wish your mother would stop fussing over you and pay a little more attention to herself? Well here's your chance to make it happen.

Local businesses in Iqaluit are putting together their own version of The Learning Channel's Makeover Story and it's specifically for mothers on Mother's Day.

"I was looking at all of Debbie's makeup and she's a hairdresser, so I thought it would be fun to do a makeover story," said Betty-Ann Eaton, who came up with the idea for the contest.

Anyone who wants their mother to be entered in the contest has to write a letter stating why their mom should have a makeover. Once the letter's done, it needs to be dropped off at one of the contest's sponsors by May 1. Children of any age are allowed to participate.

There will be two lucky winners -- and lucky they will be; on May 10, the two moms will spend the day letting others think of them. They'll be picked up at 9:45 a.m. by their own private chauffeur. With a cup of freshly brewed coffee in hand, the moms will be driven over to Debbie's Haircuts to get their hair coloured or permed, and don't forget a nice pedicure.

The moms will be taken over to NorthMart with towels wrapped around their heads. With a stage set up in the middle of the store, the cuts and makeup will be done.

"It's something positive that we can do as a community," said beauty consultant Claire Kennedy, who will do the winners' makeup.

Once the look is complete, each lady will be off to a romantic dinner for two and a night at one of Iqaluit's hotels.

Entry letters can be dropped off at DJ sensations, Grind and Brew, Sub Zero Submarines or Debbie's Haircuts.
