NWT remains SARS-free

Yellowknife (Apr 25/03) - Chief NWT health officer Andre Corriveau said the SARS watch is still on for Yellowknife, although there hasn't been any cases or even scares.

"Nothing is happening at this point in the NWT; things continue to evolve in Toronto and other areas," he said.

Corriveau said Northerners shouldn't let Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome scare them out of travel to Toronto.

While Corriveau says Northerners shouldn't worry about travelling to Toronto, that advice stands in stark contrast to the Geneva-based World Health Organization, which issued a travel advisory Wednesday recommending that travellers postpone all but essential travel to Toronto, Beijing and Shanxi Province in China for the next three weeks. A WHO travel advisory was also issued earlier this month for Hong Kong Guangdong Province in China.

"If you're just going for casual visits to family and friends or just going for business meetings it's on the balance pretty safe," Corriveau said.

A physician in Iqaluit who placed himself under volunteer quarantine was feeling better by Wednesday.

It is not believed that he has the SARS virus.
