Salon life in the Sahtu

Hair-raising adventures in Tulita

Fort Norman (Apr 21/03) - Tulita is an isolated community that does not have a salon or a hairdresser.

Skills Canada provided funding for a very successful cosmetology program at Chief Albert Wright School at Tulita recently.

A total of 20 girls from Grade 7-12 took part in the week-long program that dealt with health, hair care, and make-up.

During the practical part of the program, students learned to apply makeup, how to wash and shampoo hair, blow dry hair, and style their hair.

Students also learned to colour and dye hair, and do their fingernails.

This was a very intensive program, but the girls and the teachers -- Jodie and Jo-Ellen -- enjoyed the time together very much.

A lot of fun was had by everyone, including the school principal when they dyed his graying hair a light shade of brown to make him look 10 years younger.

During our special celebrations, these students will have some of the skills to offer a service in our community, helping all the girls look their best by helping with nails, hair and makeup.
