Rankin Inlet (Apr 16/03) - There's nothing the pastor of Rankin Inlet's Anglican Church would love more than to be told to go take a hike.

In fact, Canon Paul Williams would like to hear those words over and over again.

The 11-year Rankin resident has come up with what he hopes is a unique and successful way of raising funds, and volunteers, to help the church's community youth programs.

Williams says he made the offer to his parish during a service this past month.

He says he promised his congregation he would walk the distance from the community arena to Apache Pass one time for every $100 raised specifically for the youth ministry between April 1 and June 30.

Williams hopes to start his hike July 21, rain or shine, and will walk for as long as it takes.

"If the parish raises $200, I'll walk from the arena to Apache Pass and back again once," says Williams.

"If they raise $1,000, I'll make the trip there and back five times."

Williams says there are three main reasons why he issued the challenge.

He wants to encourage the parish in its fundraising for youth work, while, at the same time, send a message to the youth of the community that this parish and minister are concerned about them.

"Many young people believe the church doesn't care about them.

"This is seen, unfortunately, by the number of young people who are deciding not to come to the church, nor seek its help in their problems. "Perhaps that will change if they see me walking for them."

Williams is also hoping more adults in his congregation will follow his example and start volunteering to help with youth-related activities.

"Our parish does not have a Sunday School program this year.

"There is a youth service on Sunday nights, but there should be more faith and church-based activities for

the youth of this community.

"Perhaps a youth choir or even an inter-church softball league, with all three churches competing for top honours?"
