"It's changed the scope of the work," said Judith Knapp, Yellowknife Education District 1 superintendent of education.
Originally there was only enough funding for the middle school section to have wiring and mechanical work done. Now the extra million will be used to replace carpets, bathroom fixtures, paint walls and replace windows in that area, said Knapp.
The more than $8 million project will be completed over three years and includes new classrooms and the demolition of the 1965 wing.
This summer, internal renovations will begin at the middle school.
A public information evening will be scheduled for the end of April or beginning of May.
