Yellowknife (Mar 05/03) - Dignitaries had one thing to say to members of the Royal Canadian Legion, Vincent Massey Branch No. 164: thank you.

"What wouldn't be here if the legion hadn't been here?" Yellowknife Mayor Gord Van Tighem asked the more than 80 people gathered at the 50th anniversary party of the legion's naming.

The local legion has donated more than $1 million to the community over the past 50 years, supporting cadets, the SideDoor, Stanton hospital foundation and the Abe Miller Centre. This year the legion hopes to donate $250,000 to the community.

The invitation-only event was held on Saturday evening and included Premier Stephen Kakfwi, NWT Commissioner Glenna Hansen, legion past presidents, NWT legion members and guest speaker Western Arctic Liberal MP Ethel Blondin-Andrew.

"Without a doubt (legion members) continue to make a difference in the lives of Northerners," said Blondin-Andrews.

"You are to be commended for your efforts."

Blondin-Andrews was especially grateful for the legion's youth initiatives.
