Inuvik (Mar 31/03) - Getting through high school is hard enough, but deciding what to do next can be quite difficult for students.

That's where events such as the recent Career Quest come in.

Students from all across the Mackenzie Delta travelled to Inuvik March 20 to learn about the wide range of careers they can choose from.

At the Midnight Sun Recreation Centre they visited dozens of career booths and spoke to professionals in all sorts of fields, ranging from engineering and oil and gas, to policing and social sciences.

Gwen Clark, a Grade 8 student at Chief Paul Niditchie school in Tsiigehtchic, met lots of new friends and had plenty of fun.

But she already knows where her career path will lead.

"I want to be a doctor because I want to help people," she said.

Her younger sister, Allison, is not so sure yet.

"I would like to be a teacher or a flight attendant or something like that," she said, hopeful she would have her mind made up by the end of the career fair.

Keira Smith from Moose Kerr school in Aklavik was most interested in the Aurora College booth, which is the school she plans on attending.

"I would like to be a teacher maybe, or a lawyer or a nurse," she said.

Mary Gordon, also from Aklavik, wants to pursue a career in health care.

"I think I would like to become a nurse or a social worker because it interests me and I really like to help people," she said.

Carson Atkinson, principal of Samuel Hearne secondary school in Inuvik, said he believes the kids from smaller communities in the Mackenzie Delta benefitted the most from Career Quest.

"They seem to be really excited and having a great time," he said.
