Police say muggings rare

Yellowknife (Mar 26/03) - Const. Dino Norris said a street mugging is a rare occurrence in Yellowknife.

"For a city of this size it is fairly safe," he said. "Obviously we wish it could be safer."

He said the Criminal Code classes a robbery as an assault during an attempt to steal. There were eight robberies in 2002, nine in 2001, nine in 2000 and 12 in 1999. He said he didn't know how many had occurred so far this year.

"Most robberies happen in less-travelled areas that are poorly lit or out of plain view," he said. "Exercise caution on walking trails, back alleys and around vacant buildings."

He said drunk people, and people walking alone, are often targeted.

"They're seen as easy prey," he said. People who have just used a bank machine should also be careful. Norris said common street sense is the best way to avoid being targeted.

He said if you are stopped on the street you shouldn't resist.

"Give the individual what he wants," he said. "Your cash isn't worth getting hurt. But take note of whatever you can see of the robber."
