Inuvik (Mar 21/03) - Two Fort McPherson men were denied bail Monday and will be held in jail until they go to trial on charges that they stabbed two men outside Frosty's Pub last week.

In justice of the peace court in Inuvik, Jonathon Andre and Reginald Itsi, both 23, were sent to Yellowknife Correctional Centre following a bail hearing.

RCMP were called to Frosty's Pub March 13 around 9:30 p.m., where they found two bleeding men being loaded into an ambulance. Later that night, police arrested Itsi and Andre.

Staff Sgt. Mark Wharton said both victims have been treated and released from Inuvik Regional Hospital.

Justice of the Peace Tom Kirby heard statements read into the record from the police, accused, the victims and three other witnesses. A publication ban on evidence was sought by the defence and granted by Kirby.

Federal Crown prosecutor Brent Lepage argued that bail should be denied because the two defendants posed a flight risk as well as a danger to the public.

Kirby agreed, saying that there is "a substantial likelihood" they will re-offend.

In territorial court later that evening, both men pleaded not guilty and elected to be tried by judge and jury.

Itsi will stand trial on charges of aggravated assault and a breach of undertaking on June 24, while Andre's trial begins June 26.
