Iqaluit (Mar 17/03) - There have been a rash of snowmobile thefts in the city over recent months.

Cpl. Dave Kalist of the Iqaluit RCMP said he couldn't say how many snow machines have been stolen but admits it is a concern.

"We've got a problem with Ski-Doos being stolen," he said.

With a majority of snow machines in the city being new, Kalist said there isn't a specific make or model that is being targeted.

As a result of the recent rash of thefts, RCMP are advising residents to secure their Ski-Doos.

"People should chain them up and throttle lock them," said Kalist.

He added that they should be chained to something sturdy like a deck.

"A lot of the Ski-Doos are being stolen and taken on joy rides," said Kalist.

So far most machines have been recovered within 24 hours of being reported stolen and without any significant damage.

The RCMP could not confirm whether they suspect it's one individual or a group committing the thefts.
