Workin' hard for the money

Four jobs is a piece of cake

Inuvik (Feb 07/03) - Lindsay Blake is a true workaholic.

At 29 years old, he holds four jobs and works more than 90 hours a week, just to keep himself busy and "stay out of trouble."

During the weekdays he works full-time as an administrative assistant at Matco Transportation.

Then he heads over to the Tuma Group Home four nights a week, where he is employed as a justice worker.

Then on Friday and Saturday nights he jumps into his casual clothes and spins the latest Billboard hits at The Zoo Cabaret.

And finally, on Saturday and Sunda, he spends his days at Aurora Expediting, working as an office and ramp agent.

Working virtually non-stop comes naturally to Blake.

"I've been doing it for years. It's a trend I've developed.

"I don't like being bored ... and in the meantime I'm getting paid for it, so it works great both ways."

He attributes his work ethic and stamina to being a true hard-working Newfoundlander.

"We were born to work. I enjoy all my jobs enough that I may as well be getting paid than sitting at home doing nothing," he said.

Blake especially enjoys working for Matco, which involves substantial travel to communities throughout the Mackenzie-Delta region.

"I have been to all the communities in the Western Arctic and it's been a great experience and a privilege to see the tradition that comes along with them."

Blake's most incredible experience during his Northern travels occurred at Holman on Victoria Island.

He was amazed to catch a glimpse of a family of polar bears -- something he had been waiting all of his life to see.

"This part of my job makes it memorable for years to come."

Blake looks forward to spending his weekends at The Zoo.

Many bar patrons call him DJ Eminem, on account of his resemblance to the mega-star rapper.

And because The Zoo is a popular night spot for visiting tourists, Blake has the opportunity to meet lots of new people from all across the world.

"This job is a lot of fun and I really look forward to my weekends at The Zoo," he said.
