Yellowknife (Feb 05/03) - The Caribou Carnival is ready to roll with a newly- appointed volunteer board.

  • While she's excited about taking over the helm of the popular festival, she is quick to deflect attention away from herself and onto the new cast of board members and the plans ahead. "During our AGM there was some discussion about the fact that some more family-oriented activities would be a nice addition to the carnival," Sasseville said.

The carnival has money in the bank -- reportedly a five-figure bank balance -- to keep going.

But the recent concern was finding dedicated volunteers to sit on the board.

Having been involved in the carnival in previous years, Sasseville doesn't question her ability to keep the spirit of the carnival alive.

"It's exciting and challenging," she said. "And we always need good volunteers."

With the new board in place to plan exactly what events will take place and where, Sasseville wants to see 500 volunteers helping out this year.

The carnival is scheduled for March 28, 29 and 30.

On March 27, Caribou Capers will feature skits, award ceremonies, including those for the Bush Gear contest. And the Caribou Queen or King will be crowned.

More events are still being planned.

Asked why she took on the role of president this year, Sasseville praised the vibrant and unique spirit of Yellowknife, adding,"I was approached by some of the individuals who sat on the board last year, and was asked if I was interested in running for the role of president. And since I have some time this year, it just worked out."
