Press conference expected today

Iqaluit (Feb 03/03) - RCMP are holding a press conference today to reassure Iqaluit it is still pursuing a suspect in the Jennifer Naglingniq murder.

Jennifer Anna Naglingniq was a 13-year-old girl who was killed in her home over night Dec. 6-7.

"V" Division Chief Supt. John Henderson was to conducting the media meeting. Details from that conference were not available at press time.

On Dec. 15, Ivan Kilabuk Joamie, 24, was charged with first-degree murder, but was released on Christmas Eve when Crown prosecutors stayed the charge.

Since that time, RCMP have been silent.

Eleven Mounties have been assigned specifically to work on this case since December, says Staff Sgt. Mike Jeffrey.

Other than that, the police are reluctant to say more, fearing that releasing even the smallest details could wreck chances of a conviction.

Police won't say, for example, how they are dealing with whatever evidence they do have, or what approaches they are taking to get that evidence.

"When this case goes to court, we have to prove our case beyond any reasonable doubt," Jeffrey says. "Even the smallest doubt could set the accused free."
