Kimmirut rent changes due April 1

Lake Harbour (Feb 17/03) - People living in public housing face changes to their rent scale.

It could leave some people paying more and others paying less.

"The new scale we are using will include income verifications through Canada's Revenue Department," said Kolola Pitsiulak, manager of Kimmirut's Housing Association.

Under the rent scale used until Dec. 31, 2002, tenants were simply asked to report their own income.

Pitsiulak said not everyone was reporting their full income, and received lower rents as a result.

As well, Pitsiulak said the rent scale had not been adjusted since 1992.

"Right now we are still working on the changes.

"It won't actually go into effect until April 1 of this year because we are still installing the computer software," said Pitsiulak.

For those who end up paying less than they had in the past, the housing association would adjust payments retroactive to Jan. 1.

Pitsiulak said the housing association held a public meeting and sent out letters advising the tenants of these plans.

He doesn't expect too much reaction from the residents until they are told exactly how they are individually affected.

There are 68 public housing units in Kimmirut, with four more being built.
