Halifax (Jan 08/03) - You couldn't blame Jordin Tootoo's father, Barney, for pinching himself every once in a while during the world junior hockey championship in Halifax.

Standing among more than 10,000 rabid hockey fans, screaming your son's name every time he gets on the ice, can be a little overwhelming.

"That TooooToooo going around the arena sent shivers up my spine," says Barney.

"It was amazing. The whole town went wild over Team Canada's players."

Barney says how quickly the Nova Scotia fans took to Jordin did come as a bit of a surprise.

He knew his son would be popular because of the style he plays, but he never thought it would be as big as it was.

"The fans went wild every time Jordin stepped onto the ice."

Barney says you could feel the electricity in the air at the arena when Team Canada played.

"No matter what players were on the ice, it was one big 'Go Canada, Go.'

"The fans were behind the team all the way."

People in Halifax asked Barney and his wife, Rose, a lot of questions about Nunavut, especially dealing with Rankin weather conditions.

And, says Barney, many people also took the time to congratulate them on how far Jordin has come.

He says the Tootoo family got to see Jordin after every game in the Canada Room, but most of the rest of the time the team was cordoned off in the hotel to keep players from becoming distracted.

"The players would come into the room about 45 minutes after the game to spend time with everyone.

"Their practices were also closed to the public, but we had passes to go and give Jordin and the boys all the support we could.

"It was all quite an experience, I'll tell ya'."
