Road, new dock in 2003 plans

Kugluktuk mayor looks at this year's projects

Coppermine (Jan 20/03) - Mayor Stanley Anablak hopes two major projects get going for his community in 2003.

One that has been delayed but may get re-started is construction of a road to Bloody Falls.

"It got started a few years ago, but we had to shut it down for lack of funding," Anablak says.

This year the funding may be available to make the 11 km road a reality, he says.

Once complete, the road to the historic and picturesque falls should help add to Kugluktuk's tourism attractions.

"We're also hoping the new dock facility will go forward this spring," Anablak says.

While the current dock is located right in front of the community, the new dock will be farther along the bay.

"The cargo barges hold a lot of fuel in their tanks and we've had some leaks," he says.

Those leaks could be an explosive safety concern. "A lot of kids hang out down there. If they were smoking, an explosion could destroy a lot of the community," Anablak says.

The deeper bayside location will offer better wriggle room for the barges, too.

"Last year we had really high water so barges could easily get to the old dock, but before that, barges have been stuck in the mud for two or three days," he says.

The new dock should be completed by the end of summer, but it won't be open for business until next summer. The project still needs to go through the tendering process -- any time now, Anablak says -- and to have the Department of Fisheries and Oceans, among others, finish their look at how it will all work out.

The new dock will offer better storage, too.

"Before, building materials and 45-gallon drums were scattered all over; now, these things will be stored properly," Anablak says.
