Yellowknife (Jan 17/03) - Larry James Quitte, 29, of Rae, was acquitted of sexual assault Wednesday by a Supreme Court jury in Yellowknife.

Court heard how a woman was found naked outside a Rae house on Nov. 25, 2001.

The accused's sister, a neighbour and an RCMP officer and several others testified during the trial.

Const. Karla George responded to the woman's call that night and testified the woman had a swollen lip, and a bruised eye.

Defence lawyer Hugh Latimer suggested these injuries weren't visible -- or barely visible -- from the photographs taken.

George also found a set of clothes that night in a garbage can inside the home.

A medical exam the next day found no physical evidence. DNA was found on a pair of underwear, but it did not match Quitte's DNA.

He denied having sex or being in the bedroom with the woman that night.

When Crown prosecutor Loretta Colton suggested he sexually assaulted her and put her clothes in the garbage, he said: "No, I did not."

The jury spent about four hours deliberating before delivering a not guilty verdict.
