Hay River (Jan 13/03) - Two Hay River men have been sent to jail for a Dec. 9 break-in and vandalism rampage against local businesses.

Joshua Daniel Angiers, 21, and Adam Norman Rosendahl, 20, both pleaded guilty to four break-and-enter charges.

They were sentenced to eight months for breaking into and vandalizing the Pages Bookstore/Sears/Video Stop operation -- where Angiers worked -- and six months concurrent for each break-in at Godwin Mall, Styles and Top of the World.

Angiers also received an extra month on a mischief charge for breaking a window at the liquor store.

Neither of the men had a previous criminal record.

The vandalism spree in the early morning hours of Dec. 9 caused about $70,000 in damages.

At the Pages operation, damage totalled $63,186, mainly to books, a cash till, computer equipment and a photofinishing machine. The interior of the business was sprayed with a fire extinguisher. About $500 was taken from a till.

Damage at the Godwin Mall was mainly to doors and windows, totalling $4,655.

Damage at the liquor store was estimated at $480.

"This kind of attack on businesses in a small community goes to the heart and soul of a community," said Judge Robert Halifax in passing sentence.

Halifax also called Angiers' actions a "real betrayal" of his employer.

In a victim impact statement, Pages' manager Lyda Greer told the court how she was devastated by the break-in, especially after hiring Angiers and giving him a raise.

Both Angiers and Rosendahl apologized for the break-ins, blaming excessive use of alcohol for their actions.

They were ordered to pay restitution to the various businesses -- $5,327.50 in total by Rosendahl and $5,807.50 by Angiers -- and placed on probation for 18 months following their release.

The two were also given an extra month in jail for Dec. 20 breaches of conditions on which they were released after being charged with the break-ins.

"Consider yourself lucky," Halifax told the two, noting the total jail time was about half that sought by the Crown.
