Inuvik (Jan 10/03) - The early morning hours of New Year's Day turned out to be extremely busy for the Inuvik RCMP.

Officers responded to a total of 19 complaints, ranging from disturbing the peace and mischief to assault and uttering threats, between the hours of 3:30 a.m. and noon on Jan. 1.

Three officers were on duty for the night shift, which ended at 6 a.m. Two more officers then took over.

"There's always a possibility, when events are going on, things can get a little busier.

"So there was some anticipation, but it was a lot busier than we had expected," said Cpl. Brian Anderson.

The most serious incident resulted in an assault with a weapon charge being laid against a 44-year-old man, the first criminal incident of the new year.

He will appear in Inuvik territorial court Feb. 11 to answer to the charge.

Staff Sgt. Mark Wharton said the two assault victims were treated by ambulance attendants.

One person was transported to Inuvik Regional Hospital and later released.

"(The injuries) were serious, but they weren't life threatening," said Wharton.

Another individual has been charged with assaulting a police officer and resisting arrest.

Wharton said the identity of that individual is not being released.

Several of the remaining New Year's complaints made to police are still under investigation.
