Yellowknife (Dec 06/02) - Ethel Liske is suing the Dene Nation for wrongful dismissal and punitive damages for firing her and ruining her reputation by pressing criminal fraud charges against her.

Liske, former executive director of the Dene Nation, and former financial officer Helen Edjericon were acquitted of defrauding and stealing about $50,000 from the Dene Nation last March.

Both had been accused of giving themselves unauthorized pay advances by signing their own cheques for at least five years ending in 1999.

After the 'not guilty' verdict was announced in Supreme Court, the Dene Nation then filed a civil lawsuit against Liske, demanding she reimburse them for unauthorized salary advances in the amount of $61,537.58.

Liske responded to the suit in a statement of defence, denying all allegations against her, and has counter-sued the Dene Nation and its president, Bill Erasmus, for wrongfully dismissing her, ruining her reputation by the means in which she was terminated and damaging her chances of obtaining future employment.

Liske is asking for $155,154.00 in lost wages, special damages for loss of income, loss of reputation, emotional damage and public humiliation, special damages for expenses incurred to mitigate her damage in seeking employment, punitive and aggravated damages, and legal costs.

A trial date has not yet been set.
