A tale of two temperatures

Yellowknife (Dec 04/02) - It's Sunday, Nov. 24 at 11 a.m.

Inside many are gearing up for the annual stand-off of the CFL's eastern and western champions in the 90th annual Grey Cup.

Outside the wind is biting and the mercury has dropped to a chilly -15 C with the windchill, according to the latest weather broadcast.

Many walking down Franklin Avenue near the YK Centre mall, bundled in scarves and mitts, will be privy to this fact.

The digital readout on the giant billboard outside reads -21 C. Six degrees off.

Across town, the sign at Igloo Building Supplies tells a different, happier story.

The digital readout on that sign, which overlooks Old Airport Road, indicates the temperature is only -16 C.

Only one degree off, but the question then is, which one is more accurate?

The first test, a $7.99 thermometer from Canadian Tire. After 20 minutes out in the frigid cold the indicator, only three blocks away from YK Centre the thermometer, reads -13 celsius.

Only three degrees off the sign on Airport road, but now a complete eight degrees off the sign only a few blocks away.

It was time to turn to some local residents to determine why they thought the signs were so different.

It was also a chance to determine how reliable these people found the signs.

Shawnette McNeil, who works in Centre Square Mall is across the street from one sign and she doesn't trust it, or its cross town counterpart.

"I don't think you can get an accurate reading just in one spot," she said. According to her, however, the YK Centre indicator might be a better judge of temperature with the windchill.

"I think it's in a wind tunnel, it's in a colder spot," she said.

Alex Lembrecht doesn't trust the YK Centre sign.

He said he has watched the YK Centre Mall sign change drastically in a short period of time.

"It's not that accurate. It will go from -10 C to -20 C in a split second," he said.

YK Centre Mall managers said they adjust their sign periodically.

Igloo Building Supplies hasn't adjusted theirs in three years, but said it is rarely ever off by more than a degree.
