Rankin Inlet (Dec 23/02) - Two police officers received a slap on the wrist for not following policy the night they arrested Terence Tootoo in Brandon, Man. Tootoo, 22, of Rankin Inlet, was stopped by the two officers on Aug. 28 and charged with driving while under the influence of alcohol.

Later that night, the well-known hockey player was released into his own care by the two officers at the billet home where he was staying at the time. Tootoo was later found dead in a wooded area behind the residence. He was reported missing by his brother, Jordin.

Police policy dictates Tootoo should have been released into the custody of a sober, responsible adult.

The officers received an admonishment, the mildest punishment, for their actions. The internal disciplinary panel also recommended officers receive additional training on suicide prevention and arrest-and-release procedures.
