Yellowknife (Dec 20/02) - This year, some lonely stuffed animals will be finding new and happy homes with some children in Wrigley and Jean Marie River.

Throughout the year, Janet Naskathey adopts and collects teddy bears as she finds them, including one little orphan bear she found last summer. There was a teddy I rescued from the road in the rain," she said, smiling at the memory.

At Christmas, Naskathey gets all the collected bears and other stuffed animals together and prepares them for delivery to children in remote communities. Arctic Sunwest will fly the toys to Wrigley and Jean Marie River free of charge.

"I started this because in small, remote communities, there aren't any toy stores and it's very expensive for toys," she said.

This year, Naskathey has collected approximately 60 teddy bears, four stuffed bunnies, two toy mice and one stuffed wolf. For the elders, she collected Christmas mugs and tea. She even saved her pennies during the year to buy candy canes to go with the bears.

Naskathey said she is grateful for all the help and support she has received from the community.

"The Salvation Army and the Women's Centre helped with donations," she said. "I'd really like to thank all the people who helped me."

Naskathey said it's difficult to part with these bears because "I've got a bear thing."
