All four incumbent Kivalliq mayors were defeated.
Lorne Kusugak defeated Jack Kabvitok in Rankin Inlet, while Peter Kritaqliluk unseated David Alagalak in an Arviat race many thought would be much closer than it turned out.
In Baker Lake, Joseph Niego came in ahead of incumbent Jacob Ikinilik, while Steve Mapsalak defeated former mayor Donat Milortok in Repulse Bay.
Milortok, however, did retain his position as vice -president of the Kivalliq Inuit Association.
For Mapsalak, this is his second time elected as Repulse mayor and he has a list of priorities he's eager to start addressing .
Mapsalak said he's tired of Repulse Bay not getting any help from the Nunavut government.
He said he's going to work hard to see improvements made to the airport runway, as well as a long-promised dock for the community.
"One of the things I keep hearing is that the hamlet of Repulse Bay keeps getting turned down by the Nunavut government when it asks for improvements to the community because it's supposed to be in a good, or healthy, financial position," said Mapsalak.
"I'm told that's why Repulse is not getting any capital funding, because of the big surplus we supposedly have.
"I'm going to take a close look at that, and, if that's the case, maybe it's time to start spending some of that surplus.
"We can at least build something for the community to use."
Mapsalak says he's also going to move quickly for airport and dock improvements for his community.
"We've been waiting for a long time to have research done on our runway to either have it relocated or an extension added to allow bigger planes to come in.
"We've also been waiting so long now for a new dock in the community, I can't remember how many years it's been promised to us.
"I want to start seeing some action on these projects and help the community improve."
