Outdoor rink vandalized

Yellowknife (Dec 18/02) - For 10 years Steve Matthews has been giving his neighbourhood's children a place to play.

Using hockey boards, a snow blower and 1,000 watts worth of lighting, he turns the dark, frozen surface of Back Bay into an outdoor rink.

Children all over the neighbourhood, including his own, use the rink that Matthews pays for out of his own pocket.

Up until last year his good deed went off with out a hitch.

Now, for the last two seasons, he has been plagued by acts of vandalism.

Over the weekend Matthews was forced, for the second time this year, to repair damage done to the rink.

He said snow machines have been causing damage to the rink's perimeter hockey boards.

"It's getting pretty frustrating," he said.

"It means a lot of extra hours of work and buying more building materials.

"They are driving right through the boards. I'm surprised they are not smashing up their snowmachines," he said.

Matthews has contacted the police and bylaw enforcement hoping to catch those responsible for the damage.

"It's starting to be a hassle with all these irresponsible snowmobilers," said Matthews.

Doug Gillard, manager of city municipal enforcement, said that the consequences for the snowmobilers causing the damage could vary.

If the damage is accidental, he said, the fine would likely be driving with undo care and attention, which would cost $100.

If the damage was determined to be intentional, it would be a criminal matter turned over to the RCMP.

"There is a potential for it to be accidental. The speed limit there is 30 km/h, if you are going that speed you shouldn't be hitting anything," he said.
