Clyde River (Dec 16/02) - Three schools in Clyde River and Pond Inlet are now complete and the doors are open.

"These facilities are for the students to use and for the communities to use. I was very pleased with the way they turned out. The community had a lot of input on the design," said Education Minister Peter Kilabuk.

Quluaq school in Clyde River received an addition and a major renovation. The overall cost of the project was $9.8 million.

It was completed in just two years, one year ahead of schedule.

"They did a really good job in finishing early," said principal Jupeetuk Hainnu.

Quluaq school is now the second largest school in Nunavut.

Only Inukshuk high school in Iqaluit is bigger.

Thirteen new classrooms were added along with a multi-purpose room, a science lab, a computer lab, a shop room, a home economics room and new staff offices.

The library and gym were also both extended.

In Pond Inlet, the Nasivvik high school and the Ulaajuk elementary school projects took longer than scheduled and cost $11.8 million.

Work included building a new high school and adding five new classrooms and a library to Ulaajuk school.

A large gym with a stage was also built at Ulaajuk.

Kilabuk said he was impressed with the amount of thought that went into the design of each school.

"They set the windows where they could get the best views.

"I also spoke to a shop instructor in Clyde River and he told me he was really impressed with the amount of space he had," said Kilabuk.
