Yellowknife (Nov 08/02) - Students at J.H. Sissons are becoming better acquainted with Canadian war veterans who fell in battle.

Each student at the school will remember a fallen Canadian veteran by name during the school's Remembrance Day ceremony today.

Principal Paul Bennett said the exercise makes the experience more personal for the students.

"It raises the question of who these people were," he said.

Madame Marie Francois Le Doze organized the crosses and put the time into finding the names of the veterans.

"Instead of poppies this year we went with the theme of crosses that is on the veterans poster," she said.

Using the veterans web site she said retrieving the names was easy, as thousands of names of Canadian war veterans are listed.

"Each kid will get a cross and we will put them in the gym," said Le Doze.

Coincidentally, one of the names that was found belonged to Thomas George Morin, the uncle of Suzanne Defosses who teaches Grade 4 english at J.H. Sissons.

Student Liam Coedy said the work that went into the crosses was "awesome" and he believes it is important to remember.

"It's sad that they fought for us," he said.
