Coppermine (Nov 04/02) - The hamlet of Kugluktuk is organizing its dump.

The hamlet wants to spruce up the dump since people must travel through the dump site en route to the tourist attraction Bloody Falls. said hamlet foreman Phillip Katik.

"We want to make the dump site look a little nicer rather, and not like such a big mess," said hamlet foreperson Phillip Katik.

So, they built a ramp -- out of discarded heavy metal materials -- to the clear the entrance to the fenced-in domestic dump area.

They're also organizing the heavy metal site "into nice, neat little piles."

"A lot of people go up there to look for parts.

"We try to keep it accessible to the public," he said.

"We're keeping the ATV's in one area, the snowmobiles in another area, the washing machines in another area."

"That's the way they taught me in school. We have been trying to follow the book. It's been working out OK for us. But there's still improvements to be made."

Katik said the hamlet also built a containment area at its sewage site to keep spring run-off away from sewage.

The hamlet can only improve the dump during the spring and fall.

"If you tried to work on it in the middle of summer, I don't think you'd make it," he said. "It's so hot, it stinks and the bugs are out. You can't get anything done because the guys are too busy sweating and gagging."
