Stanton doesn't bid on land

Yellowknife (Nov 29/02) - Despite begging the city to delay the auction of a parcel of coveted land near the hospital, Stanton did not submit its own proposal for the property.

Four other interested parties did, however, and the city is currently reviewing their proposals. Council is expected to make a decision on allocation of the land at its Dec. 9 meeting.

Proposals for the property were due several weeks ago.

The 1.78-hectare lot is zoned commercial. Its assessed value is $744,000.

Councillors could still decide to reserve the land for the hospital.

That is unlikely, however, since selling off the land would let the city reduce the negative balance it has in its land fund.

The hospital says the land could be used for a number of future plans, including a health sciences centre or a residence for Aurora College nursing students.

Earlier this year, Stanton officials said they needed the land for future expansion.
